Autism
Autism has been framed for decades as a fixed, genetically determined and untreatable condition. That view is no longer tenable. Prevalence is rising at population scale, the biology increasingly points to mitochondrial dysfunction, and pilot data shows measurable improvement under protocol.
A national-scale emergency with a fast-closing window
Autism is not only a medical issue. Rising prevalence strains health, education and social support systems, and the fiscal burden compounds year on year. The Foundation maintains a full analytical report on the global autism crisis.
Autism Spectrum Disorder has been catastrophically underestimated. Its causes have been framed as fixed and genetically determined, untreatable, and a static disorder — not a dynamic crisis. That framing has slowed both research and intervention.
Mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodevelopment
Neurons are among the most energy-demanding cells in the body. Impaired mitochondrial function constrains development directly, and elevated oxidative load is repeatedly observed in autism cohorts.
Intermittent hypoxic-hyperoxic training addresses that dysfunction directly. Controlled cycles of low and high oxygen stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis and repair, improve energy metabolism, and enhance immune balance.
If the biology is metabolic rather than fixed, it can be influenced. That is the premise the programme sets out to test rigorously, with measured endpoints rather than behavioural impression.
- Mitochondrial biogenesis and repair — restored cellular energy production.
- Immune balance — reduction in chronic inflammation.
- Measured endpoints — biomarkers, not behavioural scores alone.
- Early InterventionStarting intervention early leads to better outcomes.
- No New RegressionsChildren maintain their current skills without decline.
- Reduced InflammationThe brain experiences less inflammation.
- Recovery of Lost SkillsChildren regain skills they had previously lost.
- Increased ATP ProductionThe body produces more energy at a cellular level.
Quantitative pilot outcomes for IHHT in ASD
A pilot study involving 550 children with regressive autism demonstrated that IHHT therapy delivers significant clinical and biological improvement, with children acquiring new competencies at a much higher rate than previously possible.
Biomarker analyses supported these findings, showing marked improvement in mitochondrial function, notably increased ATP production and a clear reduction in inflammation levels.
These changes at the cellular level translated directly into greater resilience, adaptability, and overall neurological health. Importantly, the data underline that earlier application of IHHT leads to faster and more effective recovery, emphasising the need for timely intervention after diagnosis.
- Significant improvement in rapid growth of new skills.
- Increased ATP production and reduced inflammatory markers.
- Earlier intervention produces faster and more effective recovery.
Symptom domain distribution across neurodevelopmental presentations.
Maternal mitochondrial quality and autism risk
A significant proportion of autism risk is established before birth. Maternal mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammatory load and oxidative stress during pregnancy all contribute to neurodevelopmental outcomes in the child.
That makes IHHT a candidate not only for treatment but for prevention — applied preconception and during pregnancy to improve maternal mitochondrial quality, reduce inflammatory burden and lower the risk profile before neurodevelopment begins.
- Preconception protocol — improving maternal mitochondrial function before pregnancy.
- Inflammatory load reduction — addressing a modifiable contributor to risk.
- A prevention pathway, not only a treatment pathway.
What a comprehensive approach includes
| Modality | Role in the protocol | Status |
|---|---|---|
| IHHT / hypoxic modulation | Primary driver. Mitochondrial biogenesis, ATP production, immune balance. | Active research |
| Maternal preconception protocol | Prevention pathway addressing risk before neurodevelopment begins. | Active research |
| Microbiome restoration | Gut-brain axis intervention addressing a documented contributor. | Under review |
| Targeted supplementation | Mitochondrial support compounds within a composed protocol. | Active research |
| Biomarker monitoring | ATP, inflammatory markers and oxidative stress panels. | Active research |
Every modality is assessed against the same evidence standard applied across the Foundation’s portfolio. Nothing is presented as established that has not been measured.
